The Napier L48 Samson, which has already celebrated its 120th anniversary, is up for sale. It received a 15 liter engine. This car is also known for its speed records. The preliminary estimate of the lot was one million dollars.
Napier L48 was built in Great Britain in 1904. In 1905, racer Arthur MacDonald set a speed record in Florida of 168.38 km/h. For the first time in the USA, the limit of 160 km/h was set for British cars.
In 1906, the Napier car set another record when Dorothy Levitt accelerated it to 145 km/h, becoming the female record holder. After 67 years of inactivity, the engine was restarted in 1982, and the car again broke several records.
The Napier L48 engine was the world's first successful engine of this configuration, developing 240 hp. at 2300 rpm. Later, a 20-liter engine was installed on the car for some time. It received a two-speed manual transmission.
